Octal Number System

The octal numeral system or simply octal, is a base-8 numeral system and uses the digits 0 to 7 to encode data. Octal numerals can be made from binary numerals by grouping consecutive binary digits into groups of three (starting from the right).

Hexadecimal Number System

Hexadecimal or simply hex on the other hand, is a positional system with a base of 16. It employs 16 distinct symbols, the numbers \(0-9\) to characterize values zero to nine, and \(\mathbf{A, B, C, D, E, F (or a, b, c, d, e, f)}\) to characterize values ten to fifteen.

Conversion table

Example

Convert \(536\) from octal format to hex format

First, convert \(536\) into its binary equivalent. Doing so, we get:

\((536)8 = (101) (011) (110) = (101011110)2 \)

Now, let’s form the class of 4 binary bits to acquire its hexadecimal equivalent,

\((101011110)2= (0001) (0101) (1110) = (15E) 16 \)

So, the hex value of \(536\) is \(\mathbf{15E}\).
